Yes. Everyone visiting Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park needs a valid Tasmania Parks Pass unless National Park entry is already included as part of a guided tour.

The easiest option for most day visitors is the Cradle Mountain Icon Day Pass, which currently costs $30.70 per adult, $12.30 per child (5–17 years) or $73.75 for a family (2 adults and up to 3 children). If you're staying overnight or already have a Holiday Pass, Annual Parks Pass or Two-Year Parks Pass, you'll also need to purchase a separate shuttle bus ticket. The long daylight hours make it the best season for walking, with all major tracks generally accessible. Even in summer, mornings and evenings can be quite cool, and it's not unusual to experience four seasons in one day.

Autumn (March to May) is a favourite for many visitors. Temperatures are generally between 5°C and 17°C, with crisp mornings and clear days. This is when the famous deciduous beech (Fagus) turns brilliant shades of gold, orange and red, creating one of Australia's most spectacular autumn displays. The walking tracks are usually quieter than during summer.

Winter (June to August) transforms Cradle Mountain into a snow-covered alpine landscape. Temperatures often range from 0°C to 10°C, with overnight temperatures regularly falling below freezing. Snowfall is common, particularly during July and August, although it isn't guaranteed every day. Winter offers stunning scenery, fewer visitors and excellent opportunities for photography, but warm clothing and waterproof footwear are essential.

Spring (September to November) brings milder weather, flowing waterfalls and colourful alpine wildflowers. Temperatures typically range from 4°C to 16°C. Snow can still occur early in the season, while native wildlife becomes increasingly active, making it one of the best times to see wombats, echidnas and pademelons.

Cradle Mountain receives around 2,500 to 3,000 mm of rainfall each year, so rain is possible in every month. Conditions can change from sunshine to rain, strong winds or even snow within a few hours. Regardless of when you visit, it's wise to pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket, sturdy walking shoes and a hat. Being prepared means you'll be able to enjoy one of Australia's most spectacular national parks, whatever the weather.
