Where should I stay at Cradle Mountain?
One of the questions we're asked most often is, "Where's the best place to stay at Cradle Mountain?"
The good news is that, despite feeling wonderfully remote, there are accommodation options to suit almost every traveller and budget. Whether you're looking for a luxury wilderness retreat, a comfortable hotel, a cosy timber cabin or somewhere to park a caravan, you'll find plenty of choice within a few minutes of the Visitor Centre.
If you're travelling from Hobart, we'd strongly recommend staying at least one night. Cradle Mountain deserves more than a quick visit. Staying overnight means you can enjoy the quieter times of day, photograph Dove Lake without the crowds and perhaps even spot a wombat wandering past your cabin at dusk.
So, where should you stay?
Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge
If you're celebrating a special occasion or simply want to experience one of Tasmania's finest wilderness lodges, Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge is our first recommendation.
Nestled beside Pencil Pine Creek, the lodge blends beautifully into the surrounding forest. The cabins are spread through the bush and connected by timber boardwalks, so it feels more like staying in a national park than a traditional resort. It's not unusual to see pademelons or wombats grazing outside your cabin while you enjoy your morning coffee.
There are around 86 accommodation options, from cosy Pencil Pine Cabins through to luxurious Spa Suites and King Billy Suites. After a day exploring the walking tracks, many guests head to the Waldheim Alpine Spa before enjoying dinner at the Highland Restaurant. If you'd rather keep things casual, the Tavern Bar & Bistro is a great place to relax beside the fire with a local wine or craft beer.
Located about two kilometres from the Visitor Centre, it's close enough to be convenient while still feeling wonderfully secluded.
Cradle Mountain Hotel
If you'd prefer a traditional hotel with spacious rooms and excellent facilities, Cradle Mountain Hotel is an excellent all-round choice.
Surrounded by native gardens, the hotel has around 60 comfortable rooms and a relaxed alpine atmosphere. After a day in the national park, guests often gather in the lounge beside the open fire before dinner at the Altitude Restaurant, which serves generous meals featuring Tasmanian produce.
The hotel is about two kilometres from the Visitor Centre, or around a 20 to 25-minute walk. Most guests simply drive the short distance to the Visitor Centre before catching the National Park shuttle bus into Dove Lake and the rest of the park.
For couples, families and anyone looking for comfortable hotel accommodation at a reasonable price, it's hard to go wrong.
Cradle Mountain Highlanders
If character and atmosphere are more important than luxury, Cradle Mountain Highlanders is a wonderful place to stay.
This small family-owned property has just 16 handcrafted timber cabins, each with its own personality. Inside you'll find fully equipped kitchens, wood-burning fireplaces and cosy living spaces that make you want to curl up with a book after a day outdoors.
What really makes Highlanders special, though, is its warm hospitality. Many guests return year after year because it feels less like a hotel and more like staying with friends who know and love the area.
It's also one of the closest places to stay, just a five-minute walk from the Visitor Centre.
Discovery Resorts - Cradle Mountain
If you're looking for the widest choice of accommodation, Discovery Resorts is probably the best place to start.
Located directly opposite the Visitor Centre, it now incorporates the former Cradle Mountain Wilderness Village and offers everything from premium spa cabins to family cabins, backpacker rooms, caravan sites and camping.
That variety is what makes it so popular. Couples can enjoy a luxury cabin, families have plenty of space in self-contained accommodation, while walkers tackling the Overland Track often choose the more affordable cabins or campground.
Many cabins include their own kitchen, making them ideal if you'd rather prepare your own meals. If not, Hellyers Restaurant is right on site, along with a café and convenience store.
One of the nicest things about staying here is the wildlife. It's common to see wombats, wallabies and pademelons wandering through the grounds in the early morning or around sunset. And because you're directly opposite the Visitor Centre, you can simply walk across the road to catch the shuttle bus into the national park.
So, which one should you choose?
That really depends on the sort of holiday you're planning.
If you're looking for a luxurious wilderness escape, Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge is one of Australia's finest nature retreats.
If you'd prefer a comfortable hotel with excellent dining and great value, Cradle Mountain Hotel is an easy recommendation.
If you enjoy staying somewhere smaller with plenty of character and genuine hospitality, Cradle Mountain Highlanders has a loyal following for good reason.
And if flexibility is your priority, Discovery Resorts offers by far the biggest range of accommodation, whether you're travelling on a backpacker's budget or treating yourself to a premium cabin.
Whichever you choose, our advice is simple—stay overnight if you can.
Cradle Mountain feels completely different once the day visitors have left. The walking tracks become quiet, the evening light settles across Dove Lake and the chances of seeing wombats, echidnas, pademelons and other native wildlife increase dramatically.
